What's in mulch?

The short answer is "it's just shredded wood and bark."

Over the years, we've noticed that what is labeled "bark mulch," the good stuff, contains less and less "bark."

With decreased development, some mulch manufacturers have turned to using most any source of wood product as the raw material for their mulch, in some instances adding substandard product to quality source materials.

Because adding artificial color masks inferior raw materials, most dyed mulch is made from the worst source material available, such as old pallets, ladders, construction waste, and even half rotted and toxic pressure treated lumber from old decks and railings.

The pics below were taken by our owner in May of 2011, approx. 30 miles south of Pittsburg, and show from start to finish what the Diamond Mulch Co. puts in their colored mulch.
